International Conference MEDIEVAL EUROPE IN MOTION V – MATERIALITIES AND DEVOTION, Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória (BATALHA), 6-9th November 2019
"The last decades have witnessed the development of studies on material culture, favouring an inter- and multidisciplinary approach. This has enabled a more cohesive reading of the way in which the medieval Man related to his material environment, manipulating, adapting and transforming it, of the uses given to the objects he produced, the meanings attributed, how he interacted with them in cognitive and affective terms.
Summoning this dimension in the relationship with religion, devotional practices, sensibilities and representations, carries a new set of questions and necessarily calls for different knowledge in order to deepen understanding and the interpretation of the relationship between medieval religiosity and their material translations. From the images carved and painted to the buildings edified, from liturgical objects to reliquaries and tombs, from books to personal objects of piety, from temples to the inscription of the various forms of religious life, there are many domains where the relation between materiality and devotion can be a prospect and a problem. It intersects the material, functional, performative and aesthetic dimensions with the different readings it calls for, the cognitive and emotional apprehensions, the representations (erudite and popular) it associates with, the practices that it sustains, the memories that polarize and legitimize, the powers that were affirmed through it. It discloses the diversity of variants such as wealth and social position, more or less literate training, and gender differences.
The Conference thus aims to be a broad space for debate, both in the plurality of knowledge and in the diversity of sources, historical, geographical and religious contexts (Christian, Jewish, Islamic and other), and in analytical perspectives.

"As últimas décadas assistiram ao desenvolvimento dos estudos sobre a cultura material, privilegiando uma abordagem inter e multidisciplinar. Esta olhar permitiu uma leitura mais integrada do modo como o Homem medieval se relacionou e soube manipular, adaptar e transformar o seu ambiente material, os usos que conferiu aos objetos que produziu, os significados que lhes atribuiu, o modo como interagiu com os mesmos em termos cognitivos e afetivos.
Convocar esta dimensão na sua relação com o universo religioso, das suas práticas devocionais, das sensibilidades e representações, transporta consigo um conjunto novo de interrogações e convoca necessariamente saberes diversos em ordem a uma compreensão e interpretação mais profunda da relação entre a religiosidade medieval e as suas traduções materiais. Das imagens esculpidas ou pintadas ao edificado, das alfaias litúrgicas aos relicários e os túmulos, dos livros aos objectos pessoais de piedade, dos templos à inscrição espacial das diversas formas de vida religiosa, são muitos os domínios onde a relação entre materialidade e devoção pode ser perspetivada e problematizada. Nela se cruzam a dimensão material, funcional ou performativa e estética com as distintas leituras que suscita, as apreensões cognitivas e emocionais, as representações (eruditas ou populares) a que se associa, as práticas que sustenta, as memórias que polariza e legitima, os poderes que nela se afirmam. Nela se traduz a diversidade revelada em variantes como a riqueza ou posição social, a maior ou menor formação letrada ou as diferenças de género.
O colóquio pretende ser, assim, um espaço amplo de debate, tanto na pluralidade de saberes convocados como na diversidade de fontes, contextos históricos, geográficos e religiosos (cristão, judaico, islâmico ou outros), e nas perspetivas de análise e problemáticas.
