A Woman clothed with the Sun: mantles of Our Lady, May 2016

The exhibition "A Woman clothed with the Sun: mantles of Our Lady" will present part of set of clothes the image of Our Lady, Marian liturgical vestments, and graphic pieces belonging to the Venerable Historic-Artistic Collection of the Third Order of St. Francis of Penance of São Paulo (VOTSFPCSP).

The highlight for the set of mantles, originating from donations by devotees (votive) or produced by the brotherhood with pieces embroidered with gold thread, silk, and other popular materials.

The exhibition is the result of studies conducted by Prof. Rosangela Aparecida da Conceição, M.A. in Arts, the researches " Liturgical vestments in ecclesiastical collections: study of the textile circulation in the State of São Paulo from 1750-1830", and "The Beuron Art School and the Monastery of São Bento in São Paulo: a study of decorative motifs, their contributions and implications in the decorative arts in the city of São Paulo in the early twentieth century ", held in the collection and documentation of VOTSFPCSP.

This exhibition honors Wilson de Jesus Silva, creator of the exhibition 'Iconographies Mary' canceled by the curator himself as a result of health problems. Thanks to the brothers of VOTSFPCSP, especially the Minister Sister Maria Nascimento Silva and members of the Board from 2015 to 2018 and Teacher Tabatha Nascimento, Administrator of VOTSFPCSP by contributions.

Mostra "Um Mulher vestida de Sol: mantos de Nossa Senhora" – de 1 de maio a 30 de junho de 2016

A mostra "Uma Mulher vestida de Sol: mantos de Nossa Senhora" apresentará parte do conjunto de vestes da imagem de Nossa Senhora, vestes litúrgicas marianas, além de peças gráficas pertencentes do Acervo Histórico-Artístico da Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco da Penitência da Cidade de São Paulo (VOTSFPCSP).

O destaque para o conjunto de mantos, originários de doações feitas por devotos (ex-votos) ou produzidos pela própria irmandade, com peças bordadas a fio de ouro, seda, entre outros materiais populares.

A mostra é o resultado dos estudos desenvolvidos pela Profª Me. Rosângela Aparecida da Conceição, parte das pesquisas "Paramentos litúrgicos em acervos eclesiásticos: estudo sobre a circulação de tecidos no Estado de São Paulo entre 1750-1830” e “A Escola de Arte de Beuron e o Mosteiro de São Bento de São Paulo: estudo dos motivos decorativos, suas possíveis contribuições e implicações nas artes decorativas na cidade de São Paulo no início do século XX”, realizadas no acervo e na documentação da VOTSFPCSP.

Esta mostra homenageia Wilson de Jesus Silva, idealizador da mostra ‘Iconografias de Maria’, cancelada pelo próprio curador em decorrência de problemas de saúde. Agradecimentos aos irmãos da VOTSFPCSP, em especial a Ministra Irmã Maria Nascimento Silva e aos membros do Conselho 2015 a 2018 e a Profª Tabatha Nascimento, Administradora da VOTSFPCSP pelas contribuições.

ARTICLE: Art and Liturgy thoughts and reflections on Beuron Art in São Paulo

Abstract: We will present some thoughts and reflections on art and liturgy that will help us in understanding the new sacred artistic trends that emerged in the mid-19th century in Europe. The writings of Luigi Pareyson, Etienne Gilson and Albert Rouet were chosen for this exercise because their works contain questions about the relationship between art and aesthetics, sacred art and liturgy. We will continue with a brief study of the postulates of Peter Lenz about the Beuron aesthetics and their assimilation by other monasteries, as well as religious brotherhoods in São Paulo in the early 20th century.

The garden as a source of inspiration: the floriated in the Neo-Gothic motifs of AWN Pugin*

ABSTRACT

While we conduct the research on aesthetics affiliation for cataloging the textile and liturgical vestments belonging to the Venerable Historic-Artistic Collection of the Third Order of Penance of the City of São Paulo (VOTSFPCSP), we identified a few pieces in Neo-Gothic style. Given the proximity to other churches, we seek to verify the existence in other collections, such as the São Paulo Cathedral and the Venerable Third Order of Carmo (Sao Paulo). We highlight in this presentation, two pieces of VOTSFPCSP, - two chalice veils - one with similar motifs to those found in the book "Floriated ornaments: a series of thirty-one designs" by A.W.N. Pugin, published in 1849. In the introduction to his book, Pugin argued about the inspiration for creation of  the  motifs, and formulates the "principles" to be "disseminated" as a way to combat mere "imitation" of the forms of nature. In addition to the aforementioned book, our theoretical base is constituted by the work of Henry Focillon (1983) who tells us that the issues of style; Etienne Gilson (2000) in relation to art and Christianity; Marike van Roon (2010) whose study of Neo-Gothic vestments and subsidize us in comparing these pieces; E.H. Gombrich (2012) which deals with the issues of decorative art; Ian Noble & Russell Bestley (2013) about the visual search in Graphic Design.

RESUMO: Durante a realização de pesquisa sobre filiação estética para catalogação dos têxteis e paramentos litúrgicos pertencentes ao Acervo Histórico-Artístico da Venerável Ordem Terceira da Penitência da Cidade de São Paulo (VOTSFPCSP), identificamos algumas peças em estilo Neogótico. Dada a proximidade com outras igrejas, buscamos verificar a existência em outros acervos, como o da Catedral Metropolitana de São Paulo e da Venerável Ordem Terceira do Carmo (São Paulo). Destacamos, nesta apresentação, duas peças da VOTSFPCSP, – dois véus de cálices –, um deles com motivos similares aos encontrados no livro “Floriated ornaments: a series of thirty-one designs”, de A. W. N. Pugin, publicado em 1849. Na introdução de seu livro, Pugin argumenta sobre a inspiração para criação dos motivos, formula os “princípios” a serem “disseminados” como forma de combate à mera “imitação” das formas da natureza. Além do livro citado, nossa base teórica é constituída pela obra de Focillon (1983) que nos fala das questões do estilo; Gilson (2000) em relação à arte e cristandade; Roon (2010) cujo estudo de paramentos neogóticos nos subsidiará na comparação entre estas peças; E. H. Gombrich (2012) que versa sobre as questões da arte decorativa; Noble & Bestley (2013) a respeito da pesquisa visual em design gráfico.

Publicado no livro "Patrimônio Sacro na América Latina: Arquitetura, Arte e Cultura.", organização Percival Tirapeli. Lançamento em julho de 2015.

Patrimônio Sacro na América Latina reúne textos a respeito de Arquitetura, Escultura, Pintura, Ornamentação e Mobiliário, entre as mais significativas linguagens artísticas presentes no contexto colonial Latino-Americano, sob o grifo do Conselho Editorial da Editora da Universidade Estadual Paulista – UNESP e de um grupo de especialistas da Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de São Paulo – FAUUSP. Os trabalhos apresentados na primeira edição do Seminário Internacional Patrimônio Sacro, realizado em 2013 junto à Faculdade de Teologia e Mosteiro de São Bento, em São Paulo, expõe os resultados entre as mais recentes pesquisas de especialistas em Arte Sacra, realizadas no Brasil e em outros países Latino-Americanos, como o México, Equador e Argentina. A esse conjunto somam-se as contribuições de integrantes do Grupo de Pesquisa Barroco Memória Viva, do Instituto de Artes da UNESP e os relatos de empresas e ateliês de restauro envolvidos em recentes intervenções em originais do patrimônio cultural paulista, resultando em esforço conjunto, visando a preservação do importante acervo de arte sacra remanescente do período colonial brasileiro.

Mostra "O Pão e o Vinho"

A mostra "O Pão e o Vinho" apresenta vestes litúrgicas utilizadas entre o período da Páscoa e Corpus Christi, com peças nas cores branca e vermelha, nas formas romana e neogótica, pertencentes do Acervo Histórico-Artístico da Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco da Penitência da Cidade de São Paulo (VOTSFPCSP).

Entre as peças em exposição, o destaque para o conjunto bordado com motivos franciscanos: uma casula com o Cristo Seráfico e duas dalmáticas com o brasão composto pelo braço de Cristo e de São Francisco.

Outro detalhe a ser observado pelo visitante é o sebasto de uma casula neogótica, exemplar têxtil da arte beuronense. O Mosteiro de São Bento de São Paulo foi realizado neste estilo no início do século XX, cujos princípios foram idealizados por Peter Lenz (1832-1928), monge beneditino conhecido como Frei Desiderius, na segunda metade do século XIX, na Abadia de Beuron, na Alemanha.

A mostra é o resultado dos estudos recentes desenvolvidos pela Profª Me. Rosângela Aparecida da Conceição, realizados no acervo e na documentação da VOTSFPCSP, dentro da pesquisa "Indumentária e têxteis litúrgicos nas coleções brasileiras de arte sacra".

Exhibition "The Bread and Wine"

The exhibition "The Bread and Wine" shows liturgical vestments used between the Easter period and Corpus Christi, with pieces in white and red, in Roman and neo-Gothic forms, belonging the Historic-Artistic Collection of the Venerable Third Order of St. Francis of Penance of the City of São Paulo (VOTSFPCSP).

Among the pieces on display, we highlight the embroidered set with Franciscan reasons: one chasuble with Christ Seraphic and two dalmatics with the coat composed of the arm of Christ and Saint Francis.

Another detail to be observed by the visitor is the sebasto of a neo-Gothic chasuble, sample textile of beuronense art. The Monastery of St. Benedict of São Paulo was built in this style in the early twentieth century, whose principles were developed by Peter Lenz (1832-1928), a Benedictine monk known as Brother Desiderius, in the second half of the nineteenth century in Beuron Abbey, in Germany.

The exhibition is the result of recent studies conducted by Prof. Me. Rosangela Aparecida da Conceição, made in the collection and documentation of VOTSFPCSP within her research "Vestments and liturgical textiles in Brazilian collections of sacred art."
